The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY), launched on February 15, 2024, is a transformative Government of India initiative providing free electricity to households through rooftop solar installations — reducing electricity expenses for families while promoting renewable energy adoption nationwide.

Key Benefits

  • Free Electricity: Households can receive up to 300 units of free electricity monthly by installing rooftop solar panels.
  • Financial Savings: The scheme is projected to help families collectively save between ₹15,000–18,000 crore annually on electricity bills.
  • Government Savings: Reduced reliance on traditional power sources is expected to save the government ~₹75,000 crore each year.
  • Environmental Impact: Increased solar adoption contributes to a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Indian citizenship, applicant above 18 years, Aadhaar linked to a bank account.
  • Ownership of a residential property with a suitable roof for solar installation.
  • Valid, existing electricity connection at the property.
  • No prior government subsidy availed for solar panel installation.

Subsidy Details

Up to 2 kW₹30,000 per kW
Additional up to 3 kW₹18,000 per kW
Above 3 kWCapped at ₹78,000

For Group Housing Societies (GHS) or Resident Welfare Associations (RWA), a subsidy of ₹18,000 per kW is available for common facilities, including EV charging stations, up to a capacity of 500 kW.

Application Process

  1. Online Registration: Visit the official PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana website and click ‘Apply for Rooftop Solar’.
  2. Provide Details: Select your state, district and electricity distribution company; enter your customer account number.
  3. Documentation: Upload proof of identity, address, recent electricity bill and roof ownership certificate.
  4. Installation: Upon approval, choose a registered vendor — like Flame Solren — for installation.
  5. Net Metering & Inspection: The local DISCOM installs a net meter and conducts an inspection.
  6. Subsidy Disbursement: Submit bank details post-inspection; the subsidy is credited within 30 days.
